Such was the case for Salvador Depante, a volleyball player from UST. Bangko pa siya noong una ko siya nakita pero agad siyang twinkle, twinkle sa aking paningin. The funny thing is that I never even thought of him in a sexual manner.
The next time I saw him was in a televised championship game between FEU and UST where he ably supported their star player JP Torres. He was really my type - lean and slim, not too muscled, tall enough but not that tall that his height can intimidate and he has this childlike smile that engages. And chinesee looking guy, ay gulay.
The first time I saw him in person and upfront was when I went to UST to get my niece's TR. Dun kami unang nagkita talaga at doon ko siya unang nilingon at muling nilingon at muling nilingon. Kasi after two semesters in UST, yung petition papers ng pamangkin were approved so she moved to the US of A. We actually bumped each other in the stairway and seeing that I was a Senior Citizen (hahahaha, OK that was a joke) he was kind enough to apologize and even went to help me facilitate the fast release of the documents I needed. (Sayang, inabuso ko na sana ang kabaitan niya :)) )
I didn't know that he was a Volleyball player then. I only knew about it when one time I went to the Arena to watch a game and saw him in the bench of UST. Tapos palabas, I saw that he was carrying that instrument that I hated so much in HS - the T-Square. So baka Fine Arts or Archi, I assumed. I asked my niece who was in the States if she knew him and she said they were classmates once, an Archi stude and that they have photos together somewhere tucked in our aparador. Hats off akong bigla, to be a player and an Archi student, big time yan. Normally, you become a player and get a course that will not interfere too much with your playing and practice sched (parang mali ano, studies interfering with the game)
I became an addict of men's volleyball because of him and time permitting I would always come and watch him plays on Saturdays and Sundays, ang day off ng mga yaya....(ako yun hahaha)
I see him often and as always when I see someone I like or I am a fan of, I become tongue tied. So many times, I tried to ask him for picture taking kaso baka parang awkward namang isang lalaki ang kukunan kapwa lalaki, understood na yon sa basketball but in volleyball where gays abound, that can be misconstrued as something.
E wala naman akong balak na matukso nor my action be misconstrued, I am just a fan.
Ang sama ng loob ko when UST didn't make it to the final four. Lalakasan ko na sana ang loob ko na kunan siya ng picture baka next year wala na siya. Gulay, he looks soooo polite, polite din kaya siya sa fans ngayo't sikat na siya.... Hayzzz.
Signed photo pls? Nakows if I can have that, your photo will be in the company of Mon Fernandez, Atoy Co and yes, Kobe Bryant.
